Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty”s Hindu College was founded in 1969, the birth centenary of the born-to-serve man Calavala Cunnan Chetty Garu. The seer, benefactor and philanthropist strongly believed that education is the premise of progress in every society. To fructify his vision and dream, the college was founded at Pattabiram to impart collegiate education to the people in the outskirts of Chennai.
It started functioning from 3rd July, 1969 with PUC classes in humanities affiliated to the University of Madras. In 1970, B.A. History, B.A Economics and B.S.C. Mathematics were introduced. In 1975, B.Com, was affiliated. Co-education was introduced in 1976.University of Madras granted affiliation to B.A. English in 1978. In the next year, 1979, B.A .Telugu was affiliated to bestow its service to a large section of society; Evening College was started in 1995 under self-financing stream. B.Sc., Computer Science, B.C.A., B.Com. General B.Com. Corporate Secretary ship, B.B.A., B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Electronics and Communications Science were introduced. Needless to say, it is also absolutely service-oriented. True to poet Bharati’s words, it is a blessing to educate a man than to build thousands of charity inns.
The tri decennial of the College (Shift 1) was celebrated in the year 2000. The decennial function of the Evening College was celebrated in the year 2005. The college was accredited with B+ Grade (79.05%) in April 2006 by the NAAC.
The year also saw the introduction of M.S.W., and two UG courses-B.S.C.Visual Communication and B.Com. Accounting & Finance-another milestone achieved in the history of the college. The NAAC peer team Re-accredited the college B Grade with a CGPA of (2.83) on a four point scale in February 2013.The vicennial function of the Evening College was celebrated in 2015. M.A. Economics and M.Phil. in commerce and Social work were started under the self-financing stream in 2016. In the academic year 2018, M.A. Tamil and B.A. Criminology and police Administration were started. Altogether, there are 21 UG courses,4 PG course and Research course are offered to 4300 students. Of the 180 Teaching Staff, 49 are Ph.D. holders. Certificate Courses like Tally, CS at nominal fees as well as free courses like basic of Hindi are offered to enable the students meet the increasing demands of the corporate and other sectors. Various Skill enhancement and value Addition Programmes are offered to groom the students as good citizens zealously guarding their character and culture. The college does not stop with teaching curriculum only. To make them better citizens of tomorrow, extension activities and outreach programmes are conducted so that they will learn to be humane which is the foremost requirement of the world today.
As the three Cs in the Coat of Arms indicate the College endeavors to train the young men and women to evolve as good human beings with good Character, Culture and Citizenship. True to its mission to provide quality and value based education to the needy, downtrodden and first generation of students, the college has been rendering educational service to them. To improve the quality of education on par with the International standards so as to enable our students occupy high positions both in the national and international level is the vision of the College and the teaching communities are striving towards it.
